In September 2023, Yonne will offer thirty students the possibility to study medicine thanks to the creation of a Health Specific Access Pathway called PASS. Thirty students will sit on the benches of the University of Burgundy in Auxerre to study the prestigious specialty of medicine.

Yonne, a land for students

This new course under the aegis of the Faculty of Health Sciences will be available by videoconference. On the university campus of the Yonne Plains in Auxerre, where more than 800 students are already studying Human Sciences, Engineering, Law, Economics, Psychology…, a completely renovated collective classroom, personal workspaces, a relaxation room, a gym, a university library will be available to future health professionals.

With the Institut de Formation Soins Infirmiers d’Auxerre, which already welcomes more than 300 students each year – including about 110 in the first year –, and the Institut de Formation aux Métiers de la Santé in Sens, Yonne’s vocation to become a major medical territory is even more assertive.

Even if this is only the first year of study in videoconferencing, it is also a first step towards a complete curriculum. Indeed, everything is set up to ensure that this new university path will be a success. A support for leisure and mobility aids has been established locally  and, within the framework of the Departmental Health Pact, scholarships, internships in the liberal sector and postgraduate scholarships during the last three years of study are also available. Students will be able to apply for a combined grant of €39,000 for their last three years. Moreover, health professionals can apply to an installation grant of €12,000 against a five-year exercise commitment in Yonne.

A first year with multiple benefits

Today 30% of the French population lives in a medical desert. Therefore, the stakes are to provide Yonne of tomorrow with doctors, specialists, midwives, dental surgeons… In France, the numerus clausus has been recently repealed and more students in medicine will be trained nationwide. This new context gives the hope that setting up a second year of medicine will be the next step in this academic process. In reality, Yonne sees far ahead. An important statistic is that 40% of doctors who settle in a territory are very careful to the quality of the environment in which they study. Therefore it is essential that in the long run a comprehensive medical curriculum emerges on the Auxerre campus.

The first students of the PASS program will be the doctors of tomorrow. They will have a liberal practice or pursue a career in the hospitals of the department. Right now, they represent a youth that Yonne will be able to keep in its territory, allowing them to follow the best quality higher education close to their family and in a familiar environment. The thirty students will also enjoy an attractive student life – with restaurants, cinemas, theatres, sports facilities, associations… – which will contribute to making the heart of downtown Auxerre beat. Sens already knows this lively presence since the Bachelor EGC, a graduate school of marketing, business and management settled. Much more than a first year of medicine, the PASS program is an opportunity for a whole territory in motion.
